Literacy

BPS Website – English

Beckenham Primary School adopts a consistent approach to literacy using a range of evidence-based practices and programs. We understand the importance of targeting fluency, vocabulary and background knowledge to support reading comprehension.

Our whole school literacy programs include:

  • Cracking the Code
  • Letters & Sounds
  • Spelling Mastery
  • Talk for Writing
  • MiniLit (intervention)

Cracking the Code

Cracking the Code is a Kindergarten program designed to explicitly teach the oral language and phonological skills required for successful literacy development.

Letters & Sounds

Letters & Sounds is a detailed and systematic program used in Pre-primary to Year Two for teaching phonic skills. It explicitly teaches students all the letter-sound relationships in the English language.

Spelling Mastery

Spelling Mastery is an explicit direct instruction program used in Years Three to Six. This is a ‘streamed’ program so students may move to another classroom for their Spelling Mastery Level.

Talk for Writing

Talk for Writing is a program used across the whole school to support oral language development, writing skills and knowledge of text structure.

MiniLit

MiniLit is a reading intervention program used to specifically target Year One and Two students who require intensive support to develop decoding skills.
